Big Data Science at the CHT

Several different projects are active at the University of Pavia’s Centre for Health Technologies (CHT), in the field of Big Data with applications in medicine, clinical practice and biomedical research.

The main activities in Big Data for Health initiatives are:

  • Activity: data mining and big data management of biomedical research data and clinical practice and care data.

Laboratory for Biomedical Informatics “Mario Stefanelli”, of the Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering Dept.

  • Activity: bioinformatics, analysis and management of NGS data.

Bioinformatics, Mathematical Modelling and Synthetic Biology Lab

  • Activity: analysis of telemonitoring data for public health applications

Telecommunications & Remote Sensing Laboratory of the Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering Dept.

  • Activity: spatial enablement in public health data.

Geomatics Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Architecture Department

  • Activity: Human Brain project – Pavia research unit activities coordination, data analysis , large scale physiological systems simulation

  • Activity: SAXS’ data analysis at ESRF – bacterial adhesins and infection project:

Nanomedicine Lab. for Nanotechnology for tissue regeneration, nanomedicine and infection control , Molecular Medicine Dept..

  • Activity: analysis of Microdiffractometry data obtained at ESRF (European Syncrotron Radiation Facility) and analysis of RnaSeq data for ASI – NATO project (nanoparticles and osteoporosis)

Furthermore, all the groups have a year-long history of technological migration activities in data mining, BigData management and spatial enablement, working together with research centers and IRCCSs in Pavia.

  • an agreement for software use and development for Integrating Biology and the Bedside created by the NIH Informatics Research Center
  • an agreement for software use and development for PIC-SURE, created by NIH “Big data to Knowledge” Research Center

The groups are also active in teaching and continuing education ablout BigData, mainly in Bioengineering Master degree courses, with topics such as “Data mining and decision making modeling in Biomedicine”, “Artificial Intelligence in Medicine”, and also of the “Bioengineering and Bioinformatics” Doctorate Program, organizer of the International Summer School in “Big data for Precision Medicine”.
